Filter coffee — particularly the South Indian style with chicory — has a more nuanced health profile than the popular conversation usually acknowledges. Here is what the research actually says.
Chlorogenic acids are the primary antioxidants in coffee. Studies in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry link them to improved insulin sensitivity and reduced blood glucose levels — relevant for Type 2 diabetes risk management. The chlorogenic acid content is higher in lighter-roasted coffee, but even dark filter roasts retain meaningful quantities.
Chicory — the secondary ingredient in traditional South Indian filter coffee — contains inulin, a prebiotic fibre that feeds beneficial gut bacteria. Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition links regular inulin intake to improved gut microbiome diversity and reduced inflammation. The chicory in our filter blends (15–47% depending on the blend) contributes meaningful inulin with every cup.
Liver health is one of the most consistent findings in coffee research. Multiple large cohort studies link regular coffee consumption (3–4 cups per day) to reduced risk of liver cirrhosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The exact mechanism is debated but chlorogenic acid metabolism appears to play a role.
For Parkinson's disease, multiple observational studies have found an inverse correlation between regular coffee consumption and incidence — though causation has not been established. The caffeine in coffee is the suspected mechanism, as it acts on adenosine receptors in the brain.
A note on quantity: the benefits above are associated with moderate consumption — 2–4 cups per day. Excessive consumption has its own risks. And filter coffee, because of the paper or steel filter, removes most of the diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol) that raise LDL cholesterol — making filtered coffee preferable to unfiltered press or moka pot for those monitoring cholesterol.
